Illuminating Molecular Design through Computation and Experiment
Dr. Xiaogang Liu is an Associate Professor at the School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology, Nanyang Technological University (NTU), and leads the Photon Emission and Reactivity Laboratory (PEARL). His research focuses on the rational design of functional luminophores by integrating chemical synthesis, photophysical characterization, and computational modeling.
His team investigates fundamental photophysical processes—including energy and charge transfer, as well as conformational dynamics—to establish structure–property relationships in organic dyes. Guided by quantum chemical predictions and validated through experiments, they develop new molecules with tailored optical properties for applications in bioimaging, sensing, therapeutics, and photonics.
Research
Our research focuses on the structure–property relationships of organic dyes. We combine computational modeling, molecular synthesis, and photophysical characterization to establish rational design principles. By integrating theoretical predictions with experimental studies, we investigate and modulate energy transfer, photoinduced processes, and excited-state dynamics, aiming to create next-generation dyes with optimized performance for imaging, sensing, and therapy.
